Blueberries

Blueberries (fruits of various Vaccinium species) are among the fruits with high antioxidant power and rich in anthocyanins

Blueberries

Blueberries are rich in flavonoids, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids encompass a range of sub-classes including anthocyanins, flavonones, flavanols, flavonols, flavones, isoflavones and proanthocyanidins that possess in vivo anti-oxidant and antiinflammatory properties. High flavonoid intakes attenuate age-related cognitive decline, but data from human intervention studies are sparse. Chronic supplementation with blueberry concentrate providing 387 mg anthocyanins per day exerted favourable effects on cerebrovascular and cognitive function in healthy older adults.

Specifically, resting state perfusion in the gray matter of the parietal and occipital lobes and brain activation in a number of task-related different areas, increased from baseline levels after 12 weeks of blueberry supplementation Acute consumption of blueberry polyphenols (0.3-1.88 g) has been shown to increase endothelium dependent vasodilatation in the brachial artery, blueberry supplementation in the present study, blueberry concentrate consumed once per day (30 ml, providing 387 mg anthocyanins) for 12 weeks increased activation of brain areas associated with cognitive processes including memory and executive function, which tend to deteriorate with age.

These effects of blueberry appear to be mediated by improved vascular function as suggested by the improved resting perfusion of gray matter in the parietal and occipital lobes of the brain.

supplementation with the blueberry extract concentrated in polyphenols, is closely related to higher brain antioxidant properties and inhibition of AChE activity. These findings stress the critical impact of wild blueberry bioactive components on brain function.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an n-3 fatty acid that has gained increased attention over the last 20 years in pregnancy and lactation for its role in brain development, as it accounts for over 10% of brain fatty acids and is essential for infant development. the infant brain doubles in weight, and the large brain to body weight ratio for infants (0.1) compared with adults (0.02). DHA from the maternal diet is a more efficient source of neural tissue DHA than an equivalent amount of ALA, given that less than 10% ALA is converted to DHA.

While EPA is great for helping lower chronic pain and inflammation anywhere in the body, DHA is best for the brain. In fact, studies show consuming high ratios of DHA help with depression, mood swings, bipolar symptoms, poor memory, cognitive decline, and other brain-based disorders .

If you want to support brain health, your essential fatty acid supplement should have at least a ratio of 4:1 of DHA to EPA. However, contact my office if you’re interested in one that has a 24:1 ratio. Ample DHA in the brain ensures neurons are sufficiently fluid and flexible, which is necessary for them to communicate with one another. Good communication between neurons is foundational to healthy brain function, good cognition, a brain that is calm and alert, for proper brain development in children, and for healthy brain aging in adults. DHA also inhibits brain degeneration.

DHA has also been shown to improve both short-term and long-term memory and reduce brain inflammation. Reducing brain inflammation is important because this is at the root of so many common problems, including depression, fatigue, memory loss, and brain fog. Brain fog is also serious because it speeds aging of the brain and raises your risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Curcumin

This paper discusses the effects of curcumin on patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Curcumin (Turmeric), an ancient Indian herb used in curry powder, has been extensively studied in modern medicine and Indian systems of medicine for the treatment of various medical conditions, including cystic fibrosis, haemorrhoids, gastric ulcer, colon cancer, breast cancer, atherosclerosis, liver diseases and arthritis. It has been used in various types of treatments for dementia and traumatic brain injury. Curcumin also has a potential role in the prevention and treatment of AD. Due to various effects of curcumin, such as decreased Beta-amyloid plaques, delayed degradation of neurons, metal-chelation, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and decreased microglia formation, the overall memory in patients with AD has improved.
